Don't Ask and I Will Tell: Finding Myself in Vietnam
Author; John Carroll Whitener, LT. COL. USAR (RET.)
Based on his 1966 diary, the author recounts life in the base camp of the 101st Airborne Division in Vietnam. While the airborne troops faced the Viet Cong guerrillas and North Vietnam soldiers, Whitener then a closeted gay man faced the war within himself, struggling to reconcile his fundamentalist Christian upbringing and his sexuality. He credits the American War in Vietnam as the catalyst for his activism for gay rights and career in public health.
